Abstract

This chapter discusses UN Convention on the Rights of person with disabilities (CRPD) commits signatories to take appropriate measures to 'encourage and promote the participation, to the fullest extent possible, of persons with disabilities in mainstream sporting activities at all levels'. Politicised debates about the nature of disability have intensified in the run-up to the welfare reforms introduced by the UK coalition government in 2012. A pilot study was conducted on TV broadcasts recorded during three spells between January 2012 and November 2013. An initial sample of 200 hours of programming was recorded and analysed in January-April 2012. In both 2012 and 2013, irrespective of genre, disability was most likely to be visible during peak viewing hours. The significance of the increase in representation of disabled characters as participating in society might be an early manifestation of the legacy of the Paralympics by UK television, but it cannot be conclusively proven by the data.
