Abstract

On 7th October, 2021, a general election took place in the Czech Republic and the government of the populist oligarch Andrej Babiš lost. The election was won by a large coalition of right-of-centre parties, presided over by political scientist Professor Petr Fiala of the Civic Democratic Party, who has become Prime Minister. On 17th December Czech President Miloš Zeman finally appointed Fiala's government. While people hoped that the Fiala government would be a reasonable, pro-Western government made up of sensible politicians, some of their pronouncements over the past few days have been alarming. For instance, Fiala has appointed a Eurosceptic advisor who is close to Nigel Farage. He said that under no circumstances the Czech Republic will give up the manufacturing of vehicles run by petrol and diesel and will not go over to electric vehicles. Fiala's new Health Secretary said that he would not introduce any anti-covid measures because that "would be communist". A leading politician from Fiala's party has said that the Czech Republic should leave the Paris climate agreement if the EU insists on giving up nuclear energy. Are these developments disturbing? Jan Čulík discusses these issues with political scientist Professor Jiří Pehe, head of the Prague branch of New York University. The interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 28th December 2021.
