Abstract

A lot of the research on educational inequalities focuses on group inequalities such as gender, (dis)ability, ethnic/religious/linguistic minorities or spatial inequalities between rural and urban areas, between states and regions within a country, or between countries. In this animation, we share a message that education research and policies should also focus on educational experiences, opportunities, and disadvantages across urban neighbourhoods of different income. Research through a neighbourhood lens will helps us understand how children and young people’s opportunities are affected and shaped based on where they live, and what their place of residence (neighbourhood) can and cannot offer. This animation sends a message that neighbourhood is a critical unit of analysis to understand educational advantages and disadvantages and to support the achievement of quality education for all (SDG4). This animation is a collaboration between SHLC’s Yulia Nesterova and Michele Schweisfurth and Chocolate Films.
