Abstract

The uncontrolled synovial inflammation that develops in septic arthritis (SA) can lead rapidly to marked morbidity secondary to cartilage and bone damage, with consequent disability and demands on health and social care. Guidelines published in 2006, which were endorsed by the British Society of Rheumatology (BSR), the British Orthopedic Association, the Royal College of General Practitioners, and rheumatology healthcare professionals in the UK, were designed to standardize optimum care for these patients (Figure 1).
