Abstract

Debates are still raging in the Czech Republic about whether communism was a dark, oppressive dictatorship and whether it still casts its shadow on today. In this context, after a discussion about this topic with his Britské listy journalistic colleagues Karel Dolejší and Albín Sybera, Jan Čulík provides a personal testimony from his life under communism in the post-1968 invasion period in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s. It was full of paradoxes. He was only admitted to study at university, even though he was not a member of the Socialist Union of Youth, which was a condition sine qua non for admission, because he avidly listened to the anticommunist broadcasts of the American-run Radio Free Europe. In the depth of "communist oppression" he was a student guide for English-speaking students for the Prague Summer School in Slavonic Studies in 1975 and meeting various of these students changed his life. One of the students, an American pilot who participated in the Vietnam war, introduced Jan Čulík to his future Scottish wife. A Bahai activist from Canada caused his part time employment in the English section of Radio Prague, where Jan Čulík broadcast the news which was - with official permission - stolen from the BBC World Service broadcasts. Although the Radio was supposed to broadcast communist propaganda. Etc.
