Abstract
This article is a carefully curated scholarly engagement with Carmelo Vega de la Rosa, a pioneer in the study of photography in Spain. It charted the growth of this subject in Spain. Vega de la Rosa also revealed key guidelines for the successful study of photography and its place in modern academia. This discussion signalled challenges for this field of study as well as unique advantages that it has with regard to helping us understand the periphery and is place in discourse on modern society.
