Abstract
When Vasco Mousinho de Quevedo Castelo Branco published his emblems in Portuguese language in 1596, in Lisbon, no formal pictura were used. This has generated discussions on whether these were ‘true’, but defective, tri-partite emblems, or whether they were emblemata muda in their genesis. We analyse the emblems in the wider context of the author’s oeuvre, and propose that Quevedo offers a double-edged excuse for this shortcoming: the success of the work relies on the reader’s familiarity with emblem literature in late-sixteenth-century Portugal, whilst engaging with the reader in developing alternative notions of what constitutes an emblem.
