Abstract

Objectives The aim of the current audit was to validate the techniques used in the two practices within the group to ensure that they were appropriate for the management of paediatric dental patients in the outpatient setting. Methods The sedation appointments of 194 paediatric patients treated with multiple intravenous agent conscious sedation were audited. Telephone follow up was carried out at 24 hours Results All 194 patients had their dental treatment completed satisfactorily. The complication of transient respiratory depression was seen in 15 (7.7%) of patients. Transient loss of verbal contact was noted in 5 (2.6%) of patients. There were no significant sedation side effects present on the day following treatment. Conclusion Multiple agent intravenous conscious sedation can be performed in paediatric dental patients outwith the Hospital setting. Further research is required to establish which techniques are best suited to this group of patients.
