Abstract

In the past few days, the European Parliament has approved a resolution criticising the conflict of interest of the Czech PM Andrej Babiš, an oligarch who owns Agrofert, a giant food processing industrial concern. Agrofert has been receiving large subsidies from the European Union while Babiš sits on the EU committees that make decisions about EU subsidies. The members of the European Parliament demand that Babiš should return the money. They have also expressed concern about the control that oligarchs wield over the media in the Czech Republic. They are also worried about the state of the judiciary in the Czech Republic. Jan Čulík talks to Petr Leyer, the director of Transparency International, Czech Republic, about Babiš's conflict of interest. The interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 18th June 2021.
