Abstract

After the former policeman Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, Jan Čulík asks Milan Kohout, former Czech dissident, artist and performer who has been living in Boston for thirty-five years, whether there is racism in the United States. Milan Kohout argues that the problem is much more complex than the media and academics are making out. In his view, the problem is social, it does not have much to do with racism. In fact, the United States are a much less racist country than, say, the Czech Republic. But due to extremely high levels of inequality, there is a large impoverished underclass in the United States and these people, both black and white, are driven to criminality as a result of their destitution. The attempts of the media and of large corporations to reduce this problem to racism are designed to deflect the attention of the public from what is a major issue of economic inequality. The interview was broadcast on the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 23rd April 2021.
