Abstract

Polish cities before the 1989 were strongly influenced by the communist ideology. Although, this period is assessed strongly negatively, there are still many symbols of communism in urban area, not only in architecture, but also in naming of many streets. In the paper, different attitudes of people towards this phenomenon are presented. Considering the names of Warsaw’s streets, the author described the evolution of various social groups perception in this field. Three stages of public discourse during the transformation period are proposed.
