Abstract

Simon Murray has very recently completed a monograph entitled Performing Ruins to be published within Palgrave's Performing Landscapes series in 2020. In this paper he discusses how sites of classical and contemporary ruination and dereliction have over the past two decades hosted a range of performance and performative events, many of which have been in conversation with the location's social and political history. Engaging with the imaginary, materiality, contexts and ideas of performativity, Simon will share some insights and discoveries drawn from his fieldwork in Scotland, Greece, Bosnia Herzegovina, Sicily and Germany to examine the dramaturgical rationales and objectives which underpin selected projects and performances. What questions should we ask of ruins and what questions might ruins ask of us?
