Abstract
This paper draws upon Human Development Report data and considers some global development challenges in light of Pope Francis’ Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (2016), which in its focus on the welfare of families touches upon many of these concerns. How far does Pope Francis’s document on Love in the Family confront these stark realities? Amoris Laetitia is a remarkable text, but it neglects to adequately address the multiplicity of problems facing families—including the large number of Catholic families—who live in the global South, including in India. In so doing, it misses an important opportunity to mobilise Catholic action on behalf of the world’s poorest families and their most vulnerable and victimised members.
