Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals, as defined by the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, provide recognised framework for wider impact, allowing research institutions worldwide to demonstrate the relevance of their output to societal challenges. Using the SDG to show commitment to sustainable development and innovation in an internationally recognised way, allows Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to ultimately raise stakeholders’ trust in them, by informing what topics are in their research focus and in what areas they generate greater impact (BITC, 2018).This can also lead to stronger connections with industrial and business partners, as the SDG provide a good way of articulating strategic focus, but also are commonly used to pinpoint future opportunities and risks. Moreover, SDG are gaining recognition as a universal language, that ultimately translates shared aspirations and can therefore change the communication dynamic between HEIs, Funding Bodies, policy makers and various industries (BITC, 2018).
