Abstract

Unlike countries in Western Europe, the Czech Republic has only a very small group of really wealthy businessmen. This is why the Czech economy is vulnerable to the influence of oligarchs. These use predatory practice in their business dealings. In this respect the Czech Republic is much more like China, Russia or Belorus than the West European EU member states. The process of oligarchisation of the Czech economy will accelerate as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, argues Albín Sybera in this interview with Jan Čulík. This is because many Czech businesses will go bankrupt and will be easily picked up by large economic players both from within the Czech Republic and abroad, especially from China and Russia. In fact large Czech economic players are already under the direct influence of Russia and China. The interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from Wednesday 6th May 2020.
