Abstract

Dr. Paul Millar has worked as the Czech Honorary Consul in Edinburgh for the past twenty years. In April 2020, he will be 87 years old. Dr. Millar was born in 1933, in the year that Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. When Czechoslovakia was occupied by the Nazis in 1939, he was six. When Czech paratroopers sent out from Britain assassinated the Nazt "Reichsprotektor" of Bohemia and Moravia Reinhardt Heydrich in 1942, he was nine. His mother was sent to a concentration camp and young Paul, because he was fair-haired and had blue eyes, was sent to a German family in Rhineland for re-education. Jan Čulík talks to him about these and other experiences. This is the first of three interviews. It was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 13th March 2020.
