Abstract
Photo-Illustrations for Thomas Bernhard’s A Child’ contains 22 pictures. The photos do not try to capture Bernhard’s real life story, instead they remain distanced from it. So if there is a reference, it is the textual composition itself. The series foregrounds objects, buildings and landscapes that are mentioned in the text. Again and again, the photos leave spaces resembling theatre scenery or backdrops that can be filled in fictitiously with the help of the accompanying text passages. The illustrations are preceded by three short essays that deal with A Child from literary and educational points of view. All the texts and quotations appear here in both English and German. Contents: (1) Heiko Berner, 'Places and Movement in Thomas Bernhard’s Ein Kind: Features of a Narrative Identity' / 'Orte und Bewegung in Thomas Bernhards Ein Kind: Merkmale einer narrativen Identität'; (2) Ernest Schonfield, 'The Family Spectacle in Thomas Bernhard’s Ein Kind' / 'Das Familienspektakel in Thomas Bernhards Ein Kind'; (3) Byron Spring, 'Topography of a Relationship: Thomas Bernhard’s Ein Kind' / 'Topographie einer Beziehung: Thomas Bernhards Ein Kind'
