Abstract
This exhibition at The Hunterian showcased research from the first dedicated study of Whistler’s work in watercolour. Drawing on two world- leading collections of Whistler's work, the study involved international collaboration between curators, art and technical art historians in History of Art, The Hunterian and the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution and concluded with a final exhibition at the Freer in Spring 2019. Through a combination of contextual and technical investigation, the project revealed new insights into Whistler’s watercolour technique in relation to that of his 19th century contemporaries that will inform future approaches to the conservation, storage, and display of his works. I presented the first-phase findings of our work on the Hunterian's collection through the exhibition texts, a documentary film and a research website, through which an archived version of the exhibition is available.
