Abstract

This entry outlines the concept of interpretation in archaeology. It does so by surveying a variety of approaches to the problem of interpretation taken by archaeologists, including those representative of culture history approaches, processual approaches, and the collection of approaches associated with post‐processual or interpretive archaeology. The entry ends by outlining where the concept of interpretation is in contemporary archaeological theory.
