Abstract

The paper analyzes the conditions for the onset of a localization band in a thermo-elastoplastic solid subjected to adiabatic conditions, while restricting the analysis to the geometrically linear theory. A salient feature of the analysis is the concept of a regularized displacement discontinuity, which is accompanied by a temperature discontinuity across the band. Closed-form solutions for the critical direction of the band and the corresponding critical are obtained for a large class of models featuring isotropic elastic, plastic and thermal properties, undergoing deformations under plane stress. Explicit results are given for the von Mises yield criterion with thermal elastic expansion and thermal plastic softening for realistic material data pertinent to stainless steel.
