Abstract

Parkrun, the global phenomenon with over 4 million registered to participate in weekly 5km running events across eighteen countries, is both presented and interpreted as a mass community participation event with the potential to enhance well-being and improve public health. In some respects, Strava is its antithesis – a social network for athletes that operates as a virtual community, based on an online tool with a focus on performance. This paper draws on a nationwide (UK) survey administered in the Spring of 2018 of parkrunners who have linked their accounts to Strava to explore the way in which this sub-group construct identity across virtual and embodied communities. More particularly, it considers the determinants of self-expressed happiness, well-being and general health to appraise the importance of participation and performance as agents of change in community events.
