Telecommunication companies have intensified their efforts to drive digital transformation, i.e., using digital technologies for improving efficiency, powering new offerings, and enabling new business models. However, since the digital transformation is affecting all aspects of an organization, it is inherently difficult to manage. In this study, we present best practices of digital transformation from two major global telecom operators (Telefonica, Vodafone) and aim to answer the questions of what lessons have been learnt, and how these companies have successfully managed the digital transformation of their businesses. Furthermore, we will look at the role of vendors and their role in the transformation outcome. Our insights are relevant for innovation managers and executives confronted with digitalization as well as for academics studying the management of strategic change, innovation, and digitalisation.
