Abstract
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) remains a common medical emergency worldwide. Early risk assessment is increasingly recognized as an important part in the management of patients with UGIB, which helps direct patient care and timing of endoscopy. Several risk scores have been developed to identify endpoints including mortality, re-bleeding and clinical intervention including transfusion, endoscopic therapy or surgery. Most of these risk scores include endoscopic findings although a minority do not. Recent studies have reported an accurate identification of a very low risk group of patients on presentation, based on simple clinical or laboratory parameters. These low risk patients do not require admission and can be managed with early out-patient endoscopy. This article aims to describe existing risk scores for UGIB and their role in the management of patients presenting with this condition.
