Abstract

This is a review of a collection of Tony Judt's (1948-2010) review articles on 20th century politics, history and social and economic affairs, which were mostly published in the New York Review of Books in the 1990s and 2000s. The Prague publishing house Prostor has now brought out a remarkable, 500-page collection of these articles, dealing with the work and impact of 20th century public intellectuals such as Arthur Koestler, Primo Levi, Manes Sperber, Hannah Arendt, Louis Althusser, Eric Hobsbawm, Leszek Kolakowski, John Paul II and Edward Said. The volume also includes articles about countries such as Belgium, Romania, Israel and the United States, warning, using these countries as examples, against the dangers of triumphalism, intellectual arrogance, populism, nationalism and xenophobia. Judt's articles were written in much more peaceful times than the contemporary post-2015 era, but they nevertheless warn against a move towards intolerance and hatred, which has unfortunately happened since they were written some twenty-thirty years ago.
