Abstract
Derick Thomson's ODNB entry has been the authoritative biographical sketch of the Rev. James McLagan (1728-1805) since its publication in 2004. This essay supplements Thomson's account with additional information concerning McLagan's family, correcting some misinformation available in some published sources, and education. Drawing on a number of unpublished letters and other sources, it charts his movements in America and Ireland with the Black Watch. While a full account of McLagan's life must await the editing of his correspondence and writings, this essay advances us towards that goal.
