Abstract

Jan Čulík talks to Karen von Kunes, Professor at Czech Studies at Yale University and formerly at Harvard University, about the state of Czech Studies and intercultural European language and culture studies at American Universities. The teaching of modern languages and cultures, including Czech Studies in the USA is deteriorating because emphasis at US universities is now being given to technological, finance and biological subjects. This has often catastrophic consequences when there are no longer any specialists to understand the cultures of the countries that the US army often invades in order to "bring democracy to them". One of the previous wives of the current US president Donald Trump was Czech and his grown up children are all half Czech. It is remarkable that Trump's children keeps this under wraps and US citizens do not actually know that Trump's children are Czech.
