Abstract

Contemporary business landscape is characterized by the convergence of innovation and digitalization where software algorithms open novel pathways for value creation and value capture through algorithmic innovation. Building on theories of algorithmic objects and using rich, longitudinal case study data from seven digital ventures, the study asks: how do digital organizations conceive, deploy and leverage algorithmic innovation to compete at the digital frontier? The findings reveal several value-creation mechanisms within three broad categories: leveraging granularity, exploiting modularity and harnessing distributedness. The exploration of those mechanisms across multiple firms within single industry allows us to develop propositions concerning algorithmic innovation and venture success.
