Abstract

To study the parametric instability of ship rolling in irregular waves, sensitivity analysis of roll motion against design variables was conducted using the Poincare map. Metacentric height varying with ship motion in waves, led to parametrically excited instability and large ship roll motion. Analysis of ship parametric roll resonance in irregular waves still has many challenges. Sensitivity analysis of ship roll amplitude against design variables, with both regular and irregular waves, was conducted for a Panamax container ship by Poincare map. Poincare map was generally used for dynamic analysis. The nonlinear roll equations considered nonlinear damping and nonlinear restoring moment. The results show that the sensitivity in irregular waves is different from that in regular waves. The influence of linear roll damping and nonlinear restoring moment on ship rolling amplitude varies with different wave conditions. Exploration of ship parametric rolling in irregular waves is of irreplaceable significance for ship design. In addition, roll amplitude is not sensitive to nonlinear roll damping.
