Abstract

Cerium oxide (ceria) nanostructures are important in different applications due to their unique characteristics of redox (reductionoxidation)process and oxygen storage capability. Such nanostructures can have two cerium ionization states; Ce3+ and Ce4+. The tri-valent ionsare formed according to synthesis procedure and environment with corresponding oxygen vacancies. This chapter gives an overview about some optical characteristics of ceria nanoparticles whether undoped ordoped with some lanthanide elements. Then, some applications of ceriananoparticles, such as optical nanosensors and solar cells coaters, are discussed based on optical characteristics of stoichiometric stateof CeO2-x.
