Abstract

The sensitivity of the VIRGO interferometer is limited by thermal noise between 10 Hz and 50 Hz which can be reduced by using low loss fused silica suspensions. The excess noise due to creep in steel wire suspensions has been examined and the upper limits indicate that it is not a significant noise source. The anelastic elongation of fused silica fibres does not seem to pose a problem for long term drift of a suspensions made of this material.
