Abstract
Practice-based PhDs are becoming more common, yet the debate is heated as to what constitutes best practices and successful outcomes (see e.g., Biggs and Karlsson 2011, Cazeaux 2008, Gere and Gardiner 2010, Cahnmann-Taylor and Siegesmund 2008). This article discusses practice-based research and non-traditional approaches to PhD research. It argues for and demonstrates the positive impact non-traditional forms of PhD research can have on knowledge development, while addressing and offering avenues to some of the challenges of such a research.
