Abstract

English language poets in India wrote in a polyglot context, comprised of classical and vernacular European and Asian languages. Their poems drew from orientalist learning, classical Sanskrit and Persian, and British poetic traditions to create a lively and often contentious field. Major poets in the long nineteenth century included Sir William Jones, James Atkinson, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, Toru Dutt, and Rudyard Kipling.
