Abstract

A comparison of the polarized and depolarized Raman optical activity spectra of β-pinene, obtained with a new optical multichannel instrument, provides evidence for large electric-dipole-electric-quadrupole contributions. A consideration of the symmetry characteristics of the π★ ← π transition shows that such contributions are expected from deformations of an olefinic group with local C2v symmetry.
