Abstract

We have succeeded in making measurements of vibrational Raman optical activity in the backscattering geometry. In accordance with theoretical predictions, a given signal-to-noise ratio is achieved approximately eight times faster than in the polarized 90° scattering configuration with artefacts greatly reduced. Backscattered ROA spectra of both enantiomers of trans-pinane, and of alanine in water, are shown as first examples.
