Abstract
James Anderson (1680-1739) is well known as the author of the first Books of Constitutions of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in England. This article reviews the evidence for his life and places his masonic activities in the context of his other work as a presbyterian clergyman, a historian and author, and an unsuccessful speculator.
