Abstract

Distributed leadership has emerged as an influential concept in discussions about how to achieve sustainable improvements in health care. It has been endorsed by advisory groups and policy makers as a means of extending the influence of clinicians and investing more of the authority and accountability for quality and patient safety with front-line providers. Working from a systematic literature review, this presentation examines the significance of distributed leadership in health care, considering the extent to which it reflects a consistent set of values, meanings, practices and outcomes. It also explores relevant mediating factors and their importance in enabling or constraining distributive processes. Recognizing that clinicians without formal leadership titles are regularly inspiring change and driving improvements, it argues that more could be made of this for the modernization of health care
