Abstract

This research program examined how cultural stereotypes may exhibit themselves unconsciously in British participants' thoughts and behaviour. Automatic, or unconscious, stereotyping is of theoretical and social importance, and one social issue receiving current political attention in the UK concerns stereotypes of asylum-seekers. This project, consisting of a series of five studies conducted at two Universities, investigated the ways in which the media may activate positive and negative asylum-seeker stereotypes in the thoughts and behaviours of British participants.
