Abstract

This paper explores the different experiences of North Sea oil in the UK and Norway. It illustrates the continuing importance of the state in shaping oil development, highlighting the different models that have been applied in practice. While the two countries share many parallels in relation to the development of North Sea oil, the UK has followed a more market-driven path where the state provided a favourable environment for business and multinational corporations whereas the Norwegian approach has been more developmentalist. The different approaches reflect different historical contexts and political economies, which continue into the present despite processes of global integration.
