Abstract
Bli is a work for live solo laptop or instrument plus laptop with real-time visuals, exploring the use of animated phase space plots derived from sound synthesis or live input streams as a way of representing timbre through computer generated graphics. Sound materials are generated algorithmically according to input from the performer, and the computer maps the timbre of the sound, translating it into the visual domain. A dialectic is established through visual and sonic patterns, with periodicity and chaos in the sounds becoming apparent in the animation. The performer’s control is at a ‘high level’, comprising a mapping of input gesture to systematic behaviour of the sound streams (and hence the animation). Bli was a pre-cursor to the author’s later work Allocation Dynamics.
