Abstract

Far is a piece for four instrumental improvisers and laptop made in 2005 as part of the allocation dynamics project at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts. It explores relationships between pre-composed and improvised sound materials using an archetypal musical ‘growth’ form. The laptop is used to process instrumental sound and create textures that are spatialized around the ensemble and the audience – performed in the round, the piece places the audience in the same sound-space as the musicians, creating a cohesive social-sonic environment. The piece was also performed as part of Lautwechsel in 2005 at the Gasteig centre, Munich. The allocation dynamics project was funded by the AHRB project Chaotic Gestures: Sculpting Sound and Animation in Performance.
