Abstract

This paper reports on research into the exploitation of the unique properties of SMAs in high power ultrasonic applications, in particular investigating the effect of the superelastic phenomenon on the dynamic response of a cymbal transducer incorporating two Nitinol end-caps. The experimental results, using vibration response measurements and electrical impedance measurements, demonstrate that the superelastic effect is exhibited as a non-linearity in the response of the transducer at raised voltage levels, resulting from the local emergence of martensite behaviour of the material. The understanding of this behaviour provides future opportunities to design a power ultrasonic cymbal transducer that can operate with two different and selectable vibration behaviours, which is particularly appealing in a range of applications, including ultrasonic cutting devices that are required to penetrate more than one material.
