Abstract

This presentation will outline some interesting recent case studies from the New Zealand forensic toxicology laboratory. Drug abuse in New Zealand is heavily influenced by its geographical isolation and strict biosecurity regulations. This leads to very different patterns of drug abuse to the rest of the world, some of which will be explored in this presentation. In addition, in late 2012, the New Zealand government forensic toxicology lab replaced its screening techniques with one screen based on time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Some of the cases presented involve drugs that would not have been identified by our previous methods. Case studies will include unusual carbon monoxide asphyxiations, and drug-related fatalities involving colchicine, opium and sildenafil. Some New Zealand cultural differences in drug use and sample disposal will also be discussed.
