Abstract

Nitrides and oxynitrides are increasingly of interest for catalytic applications. In the case of nitrides, some of this interest has centered upon the perceived analogy between the behavior of nitrides and that of precious metals, whereas in the case of oxynitrides, the possibility of tuning properties such as basicity and band gap through modification of composition exists. Following a brief introduction centering upon preparation methods, this chapter details some of the recent studies of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, which have been reported applying nitrides and oxynitrides. It is clear that these materials exhibit interesting properties in these areas and further exciting advances in their application can be anticipated.
