Abstract
This is a translation of Johann Nathanael Lieberkuehn's work on the function of the villi of the intestinal mucosa, presented as a dissertation to the University of Leiden in 1745. Lieberkuehn was in many ways the founding father of studies into the physiology of the intestinal absorption, basing his work on experimental observations and not conjectures based on anatomical structure. He discovered the glands that have come to be named after him but significantly for present day investigators, he did not claim that the glands were secretory and no work is presented to that effect in his thesis. The conjecture that the glands of Lieberkuehn are responsible for secretion of fluid was made by others, almost immediately by contemporary encyclopedists and maintained to this day but was not ever made by him during his lifetime.
