Abstract
Dr Macdonald delivered the plenary address on the first day of the 'If Scotland' conference held at the University of Stirling 23-24 August 2014. Macdonald, in this piece, suggests what insights history might offer as to the outcome of the referendum in September and how Scottish history might, in turn, be changed by the result of the referendum.
