Abstract

Over the past 10 years molecular biological techniques have been developed as aids to clinical diagnosis. The use of these techniques in diagnosis of infectious diseases is likely to increase greatly, and the clinician should be aware of their uses and limitations. The aim of this article is to give a background insight into some of the current techniques used in the microbiological investigations and the diagnosis of oral disease.
