Abstract
A catalogue text for The Obsidian Isle, a book published by artist Gayle Chong-Kwan to accompany her solo exhibition of the same name at Glasgow's Street Level Gallery, and the New Forest Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. The essay reads Chong-Kwan's work through historical resonances with island utopias, and via comparison with projects by other artists, from Vito Acconci to Andrea Zittel, which construct or imagine islands as utopic elsewheres.
