Abstract

The electronic structure of four members of the electron transfer series [Re(L3)]z (z = 1+, 0, 1−, 2−) have been elucidated by sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Two methods of estimating the covalency have been applied and contrasted: determination of the radial dipole integral and TD-DFT calculation of the pre-edge transitions. The analysis is extended to vanadium and molybdenum analogues affording a more precise description of the neutral complex of the latter series.
