Abstract

Hoagy Carmichael played a supporting musical figure in 11 films between the mid-30s and mid-50s. This essay film outlines the qualities that marked his characters, focusing particularly on his performance as Cricket in To Have and Have Not (US, Howard Hawks, 1944).
