Abstract
Analyses the legal and constitutional implications of the referendum on Scottish independence on September 18, 2014 for the UK as a whole, taking account of both its possible outcomes. Outlines the historical and political background to the referendum. Discusses the controversy over the proposed inclusion of a second question in the referendum concerning an extended form of Scottish devolution. Considers the main points of contention between the Scottish and UK Governments on the consequences of a "yes" vote.
